RAJA
A Wooden Throne
A chair that is inspired by the furniture designer, Jomo Tariku. He has a simplistic approach to creating furniture, while incorporating cultural twists. This chair is a statement on the eastern perspectives of time. The eastern world runs on polychronic time, a concept that is more free flowing and less structured. Polychronic culture has a more relaxed view on scheduling and completing tasks one at a time. This is a contrast to monochronic time which is more about organizing life into strict time schedules. That is what the Western world follows. This chair is about stopping time. I incorporated the ideas of relaxation in relation to time to create an abstract model of time. The rings in the top of the chair spin until you sit and lean back in the chair. Once you lean back in the chair, the rings fold into the chair and the time is no longer visible to you. You get to enjoy the absence of time.
